The Media Consortium (a network of about 35 progressive media organizations including yours) is organizing two "ConsortTechCamps" in early 2007 to bring together tech folk from Consortium member groups. The purpose is to examine our overall web strategies as well as the specific technology we are employing on our sites. Right now there's no way for progressive media tech staff to share resources and information; we're pretty much on our own and stuck in our silos -- and you know what that means: duplication of effort, spinning our wheels, and too much time putting out fires.
It's time to change all that.
The ConsortTechCamp will give us a chance to share what works, what doesn't, create visionary progressive media website directions and a support community to carry out these visions.
Based on the BarCamp style of convening, tech staff will spend a day with one another creating the agenda and participating in large-room conversations and breakout sessions-- and the participation is key (Camp principle #1: no tourists). Bring something (anything!) to share - an innovative service, a problem that needs help. Folks, we're talking tech here, nuts and bolts, nitty and gritty (the conversation will be heavily technical, and not primarily editorial or business-oriented).
The first ConsortTechCamp meeting was held in New York City, on Tuesday January 16th, from 9am to 5pm, followed by drinks at Shades of Green. Check out the Knowledge Base for the first round of information we collected, or have a look at the schedule to see how the day ended up being arranged by the attendees.
The second Camp is now scheduled for March 15th, 2007 in San Francisco-- RSVP here!
Deanna Zandt will be taking the lead in organizing the Camp. If you or your organization is interested in attending, go to the RSVP and sign up; currently, attendance is limited to Consortium members only, but please contact Steve Katz or Deanna Zand if you're a non-member interested in attending. We will be back in touch with everyone soon.
